Soudn For Media RNC's Got Talent

A product that I have chosen to produce the sound for this unit was a live talent show at RNC called RNC’s Got Talent which was recorded and broadcasted on Wednesday 25^th June 2014 at the Chapel Studios. The Show was recorded using a TriCastor Pro which allowed us to create a live edit of the visual feeds that were coming from the three cameras that were being used throughout the show.

RNC’s Got Talent was an annual talent show based at RNC for it’s Students where they are given the chance to display their talents in front of four judges for a chance to win the competition. The Show was broadcasted online using Live-Stream and burnt to DVD and sold to RNC Students at request.

There were key scenes during this production such as the opening titles which I designed especially for the show and as each performer was coming onto stage a graphic display was shown and their name was announced on a recorded voiceover which I recorded before. As mentioned above, there were cues that were set for all of the graphics and sound effects throughout the show, lighting cues for blackouts or DMX changes which were used to create different atmospheres.

Many people were involved in the running of the show such as sound engineers, lighting designers, cameramen, visual mixers, producer and director and many more which all made a contribution to the whole production. The production team were as follows;

There was a deadline that we had to work to in preparation for the show and for sound checks to be carried out as designated times for the performers. Producing was carried out in various locations throughout the production stage, places such as; various studios within the Chapel Arts Centre as they specialize in different types of recording and producing and all contain various types of equipment that were used throughout such as mixing desks, midi keyboards, multitrack recorders and various types of software like Apple’s Garageband and Sony’s SoundForge.

Production Roles within the Media Industry

Sound Engineer

The Sound Engineer is the person who deals with all aspects of sound mainly in the recording side of a production. The types of jobs that the Sound Engineers contributes to are as follows;

·        Planning recording sessions with producers and artists

·        Setting up microphones and equipment in the studio

·        Making sure the volume and recording levels are set correctly

·        Operating recording equipment and adding effects

·        Recording each instrument or item onto a separate track

·        Mixing tracks to produce a final ‘master’ track

·        Logging notes and other details of the sessions in the studio’s archives

A sound engineer must have…

·        Good hearing, for distinguishing sound quality

·        A good sense of pitch, timing and rhythm

·        A knowledge of electronics and acoustics

·        Good practical skills

·        Patience

·        A keen interest in music and sound

·        The ability to cope with long hours and tight deadlines

·        Good communication and ‘people’ skills.

Lighting Technician

A lighting technician is the person within the production team that creates the lighting effects for a production, whether is be a music video, a television show, feature film or live performances.

Duties of a lighting technician would include:

·        Rig lighting equipment onto a lighting bar

·        Ensure that equipment is working in order

·        Understanding, discussing and create the lighting designers lighting plans and designs.

·        Takes cues from the floor manager or staging manager.

·        Operating the manual and possible computer controlled lighting equipment and controllers.

·        Safely run cables where necessary and prepare lighting ready for the production or event.

Cameraman

The cameraman is the person who operates the video camera to effectively capture shots for a video or live broadcast over the internet or via television. The skills that are used to be a cameraman are both visual and technical as it requires them to capture the best shots possible for the director or producer.

A cameraman has many duties within a studio which include:

·        Setting up their camera safely and ensuring all health and safety guidelines are followed.

·        Pre-planning shots so that all shots are effective when recording.

·        Practising the camera moves required for pre-arranged shots.

·        Receive instructions from the visual mixer or producer as they would also want certain shots to mix with the other cameramen for a high quality video.

·        Think about location, the position of a camera within the studio can affect the way a video looks, so It may be useful for them to try different positions of the camera before recording. If it is a large studio, the cameraman may be able to use scaffolding to access a higher area and have some wide angle shots.

Floor Manager

The floor manager is the person who manages any interaction or activity within the studio live area. They make the deacons to where everything goes and the general activity of the studio – this may include, giving instructions to the cameramen, the performer(s) and anyone else who is in the live area. The floor manager takes instructions from the producer via earpiece to tell them what is wanted from the team in the studio.

Visual Mixer

A visual mixer operator controls all the shots that are coming through from the cameras and is able to decide what shots are going to be broadcasted or used during the recording. The visual mixer operator must have creative skills to be able to produce a high quality mix. The visuals are as crucially important as the sound when shooting a music video within a studio as the person watching the video wants to see a high quality video.

Grip

The camera grip is the person responsible within a production team who organises and prepares the relevant equipment such as; dollies, track, cranes, camera cars, and insert trailers. The grip is also an assistant to the cameraman during the filming and recording of the production as they secure the camera tripod to the dolly and keep a hold of it throughout the recording to ensure that there are no camera shakes or problems with the equipment.

Producer

A producer is probably the most important person within the production as they see it and supervise from the start to finish and ensure that everything is running to plan and has the final say when it comes to decision making or in general. The producer deals with the practical side of the production and behind the scenes work and keeping a project running smoothly, so that the director and the rest of the team can concentrate on the creative aspects of the production.

Director

As mentioned above, the Director is the team member who deals with the creative side of the production and basically makes it come to life from ideas that they would have created beforehand. General duties that a director undertakes could include;

§  working out the human and material resources needed;

§  drafting a timescale for the job;

§  estimating costs and setting the quality standards;

§  monitoring the production processes and adjusting schedules as needed;

§  being responsible for the selection and maintenance of equipment;

Assistant Sound Engineer

The assistant sound engineer assists the main sound engineers during setup and throughout the recording process by setting up equipment, recording software and ensuring that all recordings are documented detailing all of the times of recording to ensure a smooth running. The assistant sound engineer may not have a direct say in how the recording should sound but they would help the main sound engineer to make it the highest quality recording.

A photographer within a production team would have to be imaginative to be able to capture the best images possible of the performer. During chapel sessions I have had experience of being a photographer. As the artists weren’t there for a long time recording, I had to be quick thinking and creative as well as focusing on the end product which was to provide high quality images for the artist but as well as to use them in their music video.

As I was using a DSLR Camera with changeable lenses I had to have top knowledge of technical skills to be able to capture a high quality image. As well as technical skills I had to use my interpersonal skills to liaise with the performer to find out what images they would like as well as what is needed as i could ask them to look at the camera lens during certain parts of the song for greater creativity and effect.

By also liaising with the lighting designer we could create an effective scene which would look fantastic on both my camera and the production video cameras. Also, positioning myself and the camera in certain heights and locations of the live area I could use my creativity and find different angels that would work affectively with the lighting.

Sunshine Radio | Drive Time in the Afternoon

DRIVE TIME IN THE AFTERNOON 

Sunshine Radio is a local Radio that broadcasts over the two counties of Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. There are only three other main radio stations within this radius which are Free Radio, BBC Hereford and Worcester and Sunshine Radio 882. 

The radio station I have focused on is Sunshine Radio which is the local radio station for Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. I have particularly chosen presenter Ian Davies’ show which is the drive time show in the afternoon as he presents a casual, informal and upbeat show which I prefer to listen to.

The show runs between 4:00pm and 7:00pm in the evenings as this is the average times for listeners to listen to Sunshine as they are driving home from their workplace.

There seems to be a few competitions that take place during the show including; Theme Tune in Revers and Guess the Year of the Track.

Theme tune in reverse includes Ian Davies playing a television theme tune backwards and asks his listeners to try and guess what that tune is to be entered into a prize draw for that specific day.

Listeners can enter these competitions in many ways including, email, text messaging, phone calls and via social media websites such as; Facebook and Twitter. This allows listeners to enter by ease as they would have the option of how to enter.

Below quotes The Sunshine Station Manager’s reply to my recent email to Sunshine Radio; “In answer to your enquiry, we don’t subscribe to RAJAR which is the body that measures listening figures in the UK as some other stations don’t. Based upon local popularity, we find that this does not impede our revenue at present” – Mark Edwards, Sunshine Radio

Sunshine receives a lot of income from their advertisements that they broadcast on a regular basis which the majority of are local businesses and charities which advertise their companies on the local radio to attract local customers.

Sunshine also update listeners on local traffic updates throughout Herefordshire and Monmouthshire – Ian focuses a lot on traffic updates within his show as it has a lot of listeners who are travelling, also mentioned above.

There is a large range of music at this time as there would be a large range of listeners at this time who obviously have different tastes in music. Ian tends to play a lot of well-known songs from 70s to new songs that are featured in the charts. There are a lot of requests that are made to the show at this time.

As well as traffic, Sunshine presenters have a tendency to discuss local weather and news a lot on during broadcasting as well as the hourly Local and National News from the Sky News Centre.

There are many announcements that are made throughout the show that include; events within the two counties, shout outs ie: Birthdays and special occasions and as mentioned above, traffic alerts or emergency information.

Seren The Heron

Seren The Heron performing at The Chapel Studios.

Seren The Heron is a seventeen year old folk singer and songwriter from the Crickhowell, near Brecon who has been writing her own material since a young age. Seren's performing has begun to become more popular in the past two years due to her writing her own songs and have started to perform at small local based musical events.

On Monday, February 3rd 2014 the studios were set-up to record Seren's performance. The team were really excited to be recording Seren as they believed that it would test their ability and professionalism as her style of music was rather different. 

The cameras that were used were kept static as they were believed to be set up with great positioning which would work effectively with the lighting in the live area of the studio.

As you can see in the image below, we used a camera dolly for the main camera as this would allow us to capture the footage in various angles which would result in a higher quality product.

On Monday 21st October, The RTU's and Jake put together a jamming session for all the Level 3 students to have a hands on experience of setting up The Chapel Studio. 
I took on the role of Audio Engineer and Floor Manager. both these jobs are demanding and i had to be thinking fast and making quick and prompt decisions. 

Floor Manager
As floor manager i took on the responsibilities of directing the guys in my team to set up the recording studios in the quickest time possible. by doing so, we were able to set up the equipment such as drum kit, microphones and amplifiers and rigging them to the audio console via the XLR patch bay. 

Audio Engineer
As part of the role as Audio Engineer i had to set up the audio console and perform sound checks to ensure that the band sounded at their best possible. i performed many tasks to do this, such as; adjusting equalization, cut and boosting, changing the top and bottom levels and many more.  
Jack who as well as playing lead guitar decided to become vocalist and wanted to hear himself through monitor speakers, so we quickly set them up using the 350 watt Live Mackie Speakers and patched them using the patch bay in Control Room A so he would be able to hear himself through them.

It was great to have a hands on experience and to do something different for a change. i will hopefully be performing many different roles within the industry throughout the year.
